In today's stressful world people are looking for natural alternatives to try to deal with the tensions of life.
Hence, relaxation therapies have been emerging as a very beneficial solution for many. While some therapies work with
the body's chemistry or physical response, the mind-body therapies are neither invasive nor dependant upon physical touch
for their results. One such therapy is Hypnotherapy (the application of hypnosis for therapeutic benefit).
Although not generally thought of as a relaxation therapy in itself, hypnosis can be easily and effectively applied to the
issue of stress. While there are a variety of induction techniques, one of the most commonly used approaches hypnotherapists
apply involves progressive relaxation of the mind and body. This relaxation in itself has therapeutic benefit.
Indeed, many clients have come to their hypnosis sessions for say, smoking or weight loss, having physical tension or a headache
and find their pain and tension is gone by the end of the session.
Application of hypnosis directly as a relaxation
therapy might begin with a full progressive relaxation induction and then progress to visualization by the client of a relaxing
setting or event. Once the hypnotic state is reached, direct post-hypnotic suggestion could then be given that would
involve the mental releasing of stress, tension, and pressure. Many hypnotherapists will also give suggestion for a
"tool", such as a word or phrase, gesture, physical or visualized anchor point for the client to apply themselves
for stress relief under times of tension. The client should then be gently and gradually emerged from the hypnotic state
to full alterness. Several sessions may be necessary for the client to fully reach his or her relaxation goals.
For the time between visits the client should be encouraged to practice progressive relaxation for themselves at least once
daily and apply any suggested "tools" as needed. The hypnotherapist may also include a recorded relaxation
session CD or tape for the client to use.
Many hypnotherapists will work with their clients to help them learn
self-hypnosis for stress and will coordinate their work with any other adjunct therapies and practitioners the client may
be utilizing. Live in the Kalamazoo area?
